EWC Mentors’ Effective Networking and Training Cooperation Reinforcement

Final conference in Malaga

21-22.05.2025

The two-day final conference began with a welcome and presentation of the project’s scope, objectives, and activities. A key focus was on the mentoring programme and the EWC (European Works Council) chatbot. The mentoring programme was discussed in terms of its concept, methodology, timeline, materials, and outcomes, with contributions from various countries highlighting local experiences and thematic focuses such as the EWC Directive recast and GDPR. The chatbot was introduced as a pioneering tool in the EU context, offering structured knowledge in basic and advanced modules about EWCs. Participants provided feedback, suggesting improvements like adding contact points for further support.

The conference also addressed recent developments in EWCs and the proposed recast of the EWC Directive, including legislative progress, stakeholder positions, and the importance of enforceable penalties. Discussions reflected on delays due to political processes and the need for improved regulations.

Regarding green and digital transitions, participants noted these topics are underrepresented in EWC discussions and collective agreements, despite strong union engagement. Concerns were raised about competitiveness, rising costs, and job risks, particularly in sectors like mining and metal production.

On the second day, discussions continued on the costs, benefits, and potential changes to EWCs from both employer and worker perspectives. A draft final report was presented, summarizing project activities, the mentoring programme, the chatbot, and recommendations.

Recommendations included tailoring mentoring to participants’ experience levels, offering hybrid formats, increasing interactivity, and providing more practical examples. For the chatbot, suggestions included regular updates, adding partner contacts, broader dissemination, and securing future funding. Regarding the Directive recast, emphasis was placed on national implementation, enforcement, and promoting EWC establishment, especially in underrepresented regions.

The meeting concluded with a positive evaluation of the project’s outcomes and suggestions for improvement in future initiatives, particularly balancing meeting formats, enhancing interactivity, and focusing on soft skills development. Participants expressed appreciation and interest in continued collaboration.
